The Patient Support Specialist is responsible for responding to patient inquiries regarding insurance benefits, patient responsibility, insurance updates, payment plans, eligibility and claims in a confidential, professional, and ethical manner. Communication to patients must be timely and documented in Athena.
Job Responsibilities:
- Respond to patient questions via telephone, e-mail, and written correspondence regarding insurance benefits, provider contracts, patient responsibility, eligibility and claims in a confidential, professional, and ethical manner.
- Resolve patient issues and complaints in a timely manner.
- Establish payments plans as requested.
- Document Athena with clear, concise and thorough notes
- Respond to patient calls/requests within 48 hours of initial request.
- Research and analyze data to address operational challenges and customer service issues. Report any trends to management.
- Provide patients with requested information, including those that are difficult and upset.
- Assist with other billing/collection duties, as needed.
Job Requirements:
- Solid understanding of health insurance plans, billing functions, and electronic medical records.
- Excellent customer service, multi-tasking, and time management skills.
- Ability to achieve team goals while demonstrating organizational values and utilizing resources responsibly.
- Proficient computer skills; working knowledge of billing software and/or electronic medical record (Athena experience a plus) Adept in written and verbal communication, as well as interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to adapt to a constantly changing environment.
- Be accountable, when you uncover an issue or trend, assess and report what is happening in terms of impact, making improvements, and course correcting along the way.
