Sonographers demonstrate an understanding of human anatomy, physiology, pathology, and medical terminology, showing competence in production, use, recognition, and ana! lysis of ultrasound images and patterns used for patient diagnosis. The Sonographer is responsible for performing the daily sonographic procedures and the independent operation of ultrasound equipment, and for performing diagnostic sonographic procedures according to Radiologist. The Sonographer maintains a high standard of medical ethics at all times and is self-motivated to uphold and improve his/her education and skills to ensure professional competence.
Ability to access, manage and update patient medical records through Hospital Electronic Medical Record Information System.
Accurately access patient medical records
Input physicianâs orders appropriately to patientâs records
Review documentation for ongoing patient care
Communicate patient record with ancillary hospital services
Maintains patient confidentiality as outlined by privacy and HIPAA guidelines
Practices according to the SDMS Code of Ethics fo! r the Profession of Diagnostic Medical Ultrasound.
Ed! ucates, interviews, screens, and explains imaging and safety procedures to patient assuming responsibility for their safety, physical well being, and emotional security while in the sonographer's care.
Positions patient on imaging table and utilizes immobilization devices as warranted for safety or to obtain optimum views of specified areas of the body as requested by a Physician and following protocols developed by a Radiologist.
Cleans room and equipment after each patient and assures orderliness of area.
Monitors patient during procedures either through direct contact, by the use of two-way voice communication or through control room window and/or closed circuit TV screen.
Practices universal safety precautions to minimize exposure to patient, self, and staff.
Performs and provides evidence of ongoing quality assurance activities and collaborates and participates in quality review with others to evaluate the quality of care, p! erformance and patient satisfaction.

Radiologist/Physician Orders
Fiscally responsible for supply ordering according to established par and budget levels and the posting of correct procedure charges.
Participates in and ensures continuing education activities as supported and value-added to the current position are continually completed to maintain competency and quality of patient care.
Follows Department exam protocol and Radiologist guidelines in documenting sonographic findings.
Performs accurate clinical assessment to identify patient signs and symptoms and adapt procedures as appropriate.
Effectively operates sonographic equipment to identify and record appropriate anatomical, pathological and diagnostic sonographic images.
Uses independent judgment during the sonogram to accurately differentiate between normal and pathologic findings. Initiates the appropriate methods and level of e! xploration necessary to document, clarify and quantify disease processe! s.
Analyzes sonograms, synthesizes sonographic information in medical history and effectively communicates findings to the appropriate physician.
Practices universal safety precautions to minimize exposure to patient, self, and staff.
Participates in facility Quality Improvement/IOP Program
Follows policies and procedures for infection control and facility safety in accordance with regulatory guidelines.
Follows all applicable hospital policies and procedures as required.
Demonstrates behaviors consistent with organizational mission and goals.
Follows Patients Rights Policy at all times.
Complete position specific competencies annually.
Other duties as assigned by the Director or other members of management.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Satisfactory completion of formal ultrasound training in an AMA approved school and/or formal on-the-job ultrasound training in addition to gra! duating from an AMA approved medical program. Recommend experience in abdominal, OB/GYN, small parts, vascular and interventional ultrasound.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
BLS
Minimum requirement: RDMS abdominal specialty. It is expected the sonographer obtain ob/gyn specialty credentialing and RVT within a reasonable period of time after hire.
