Under direct supervision of the Principal Investigator (PI) or senior lab members as designated by PI, incumbent serves as technician for research laboratory studying virus host interactions of HIV and related primate viruses. Responsibilities include performing molecular and cellular biology procedures. Specifically, incumbent will maintain cell lines in tissue culture, isolate genomic DNA and generate cDNA from primary cells, make and titer HIV, AAV, and lentiviral stocks, prepare chemicals and media, assist with routine lab maintenance, provide student support. Other duties as assigned.

Required/Preferred

Demonstrated skill in basic molecular genetics and cell biology procedures.

Required

Skill in standard sterile techniques used in tissue cultures and bacterial cultures.

Required

Comfort in BSL2+ facility and working with BSL2+ agents.

Required

Competencies in BSL2+ practices.

Preferred

Skill in preparing and handling of viral stocks.

Preferred

Competencies in DNA cloning.

Preferred

Skill in use of standard computer software, including Excel and Word.

Required

Familiar with use of DNA analysis software.

Preferred

Demonstrated skill in performing chemical and mathematical calculations (ex calculate concentrations of solutions).

Required

Preparation of various stock solutions and sterilization of solutions by steam autoclave or by disposable filter units.

Skill in preparing acrylamide and agarose electrophoresis gels operated on gel electrophoresis apparatus and power supplies.

Preferred

Communication skill (written, oral) to maintain lab protocols, notebooks, and to prepare and make research presentation in lab meetings.

Skill in reading and following instructions in laboratory protocols and other scientific documents. Skill in following written laboratory protocols. Ability to perform a given protocol with meticulous precision.

Ability to maintain accurate and timely records of experiments, samples and equipment.

Skill in prioritizing assignments to complete work in a timely manner with deadlines, fluctuating workloads, or last minute changes. Skill in working independently and following through on assignments.

Knowledge of laboratory safety procedures associated with the handling and disposal of chemicals and chemical waste, biohazards, and biohazardous waste.

Knowledge of University guidelines related to biological safety.

B.S. Degree in Microbiology, Cell Biology, Biochemistry or related field and one year of relevant lab experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
